National parks and wildlife reserves

Nepal has altogether nine national parks, four wildlife reserves and three-conservation area. Almost 18 percent of the total area in Nepal is protected. The low land areas in the country called Terai, which is the richest habitat with tall grasslands interspersed with riverine and hardwood Sal Forest. You can see that there are wildlife such as the swamp deer, musk deer, black buck, blue bull, the royal Bengal tiger, Gharial and marsh mugger crocodile and the last of a breed of Asiatic wild buffalo. Parks and Reserves are also rich in bird species with a variety of babbles and orioles, koels and drongos, peacocks and floricans, and a multitude of wintering wildfowl. The parks offer you bird watching opportunities with its 400 species of birds, including the rare spotted wren babbler and the olive ground warbler. Wildlife include the endangered red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, Ghoral, Tahr, wild boar, barking deer, Himalayan marmot, weasel langur monkey and serow.
