Important Trip Note
Important Trip Note

  • All Tibet tours must be in an organized group. You cannot enter alone. The tour operator gets your permits (Tibet Travel Permit, Aliens' Travel Permit, Military Permit) about 30 days before, using your passport scans.

  • You need a Chinese Group Visa to enter Tibet from Nepal. This is made in Kathmandu in 3-4 working days for a group of at least 4 people. A normal Chinese visa does not work for this trip.

  • About 40% of travelers feel mild altitude sickness at high altitudes. Spend 2-3 days in Lhasa (at 3,650m) to adjust, drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day, and avoid alcohol. Guides carry oxygen and first-aid kits. If you get altitude sickness easily, see a doctor about the medicine called Diamox.

  • Bring warm clothes like thermal underwear, a down jacket, windproof gear, good hiking boots, strong sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, medicines, and a power bank. Keep your luggage under 15 kg.

  • The weather can change fast. There are no refunds if the views are cloudy, but the trip plans many spots to see Everest, including Gawula Pass and Rongbuk.

  • You must have travel insurance that covers high altitude (up to 5,500m), medical evacuation (at least $100,000), and trip cancellation. It usually costs $50 to $80 for 8 days.

  • Respect Tibetan culture: Do not take photos inside monasteries without permission. Walk clockwise around sacred places. Avoid talking about politics.

  • The border crossing at Gyirong or Rasuwagadhi has rough roads and takes about 10 hours to Kathmandu. You can pay extra for a jeep upgrade to travel more comfortably.

  • Most jeep tours finish successfully (~98.5%), better than trekking in Nepal (70-90%) because vehicles reduce physical strain and reach remote spots more easily.

Meals & Accommodation

Meals

Your Tibet Everest Base Camp tour includes daily breakfast at all hotels, giving you a great start to each day. Selected lunches and dinners are also included at key locations throughout the journey. We serve a mix of Tibetan, Chinese, and international food to suit different tastes.

Try authentic Tibetan dishes like momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), tsampa (roasted barley flour), and butter tea. Vegetarian options are always available. During the tour, you will also have opportunities to eat at local restaurants where meals are not included, allowing you to explore Tibetan cuisine at your own pace. Our guides can recommend the best local eateries.

At higher altitudes near Everest North Base Camp, food options become simpler but remain nutritious and filling. We ensure you get enough calories and hydration to maintain your energy in the challenging high-altitude environment.

Accommodation

We provide comfortable 3-4 star hotel accommodations in Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse, and Gyirong. All hotels are carefully selected for cleanliness, comfort, and accessibility. Each room comes with private bathrooms, hot water, comfortable beds, and Wi-Fi connection (though the internet may be slower than you're used to).

In Lhasa, you will stay in modern hotels with good facilities, including restaurants, heating, and helpful staff. These hotels offer the perfect base for acclimatization and sightseeing. Near Rongbuk Monastery, close to Everest Base Camp, accommodation is in simple guesthouses or lodges due to the remote location. While basic, these lodges are clean and provide everything you need, including blankets, hot meals, and bathroom facilities.

Optional upgrades to luxury hotels are available in Lhasa and Shigatse if you want more comfort and amenities. Just let us know your preferences when booking your Tibet tour 2026, and we will customize the accommodations to meet your needs.

Best Time For Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour

The best season Tibet EBC experience is during spring and autumn when weather conditions are most favorable. Here's what you need to know about timing your adventure:

Spring Season (April to June)

Spring is one of the most popular times for the Tibet Everest Base Camp tour. April through June offers clear skies, mild temperatures, and excellent visibility for mountain views. The temperatures range from 10-20°C (50-68°F) in lower areas during daytime, though it remains cold at Everest Base Camp. Flowers bloom across the Tibetan plateau, making the landscape colorful and beautiful. This is peak season, so book early to secure your spot.

Autumn Season (September to October)

Autumn is considered the absolute best time for EBC Tibet from Kathmandu. September and October bring crystal-clear skies, stable weather, and the clearest mountain views of the year. Temperatures are comfortable during the day (10-18°C or 50-64°F) with cold nights. This is the most reliable season for viewing Mount Everest without cloud cover. The post-monsoon air is incredibly clean, making photography spectacular.

Avoid Monsoon and Winter

Monsoon season (July to August) brings heavy rain in Nepal and occasional storms in Tibet, making roads muddy and views obscured. Winter (November to March) is extremely cold with temperatures dropping to -20°C (-4°F) at Everest Base Camp. Many high passes may be closed due to snow, and travel becomes difficult.

Permits & Insurance

All travelers need multiple permits to enter Tibet and visit the Everest region. Don't worry - we handle all permit applications for you! Here's what you need:

  • Tibet Travel Permit: The main permit required for all foreign visitors entering Tibet

  • Aliens' Travel Permit: Required for travel outside Lhasa to areas like Shigatse and Everest

  • Military Permit: Needed specifically for the Everest Base Camp North Face area

We begin the permit application process 30 days before your tour starts. You need to send us clear scans of your passport and Chinese Group Visa. Processing takes 2-3 weeks, so early booking is important.

Chinese Group Visa

When entering Tibet from Nepal, you cannot use a regular Chinese visa. Instead, you need a Chinese Group Visa processed in Kathmandu. This visa is arranged for groups of a minimum 4 people and takes 3-4 working days. We help coordinate this process. The cost is approximately $125-150 per person and is not included in the tour price.

Important: All Tibet tours require organized group travel. Independent travel to Tibet is not permitted by Chinese regulations. You must book through a registered tour operator like Himalaya Trekking Nepal.

Mandatory Travel Insurance

  • High-altitude activities up to 5,500 meters

  • Medical evacuation with at least $100,000 coverage

  • Emergency helicopter rescue

  • Trip cancellation and interruption

  • Medical treatment and hospitalization

  • Quality insurance for 8 days usually costs $50–80

  • Recommended providers: World Nomads, IMG Global, or similar, experienced with Himalayan adventures

  • Proof of insurance must be sent before departure

Tips & Essential Information

Altitude Acclimatization

Around 40% of travelers get mild altitude sickness at high altitudes. Here's how to stay safe:

  • Spend 2-3 days in Lhasa (3,650m) before going higher.

  • Drink 3-4 liters of water every day to stay hydrated.

  • Skip alcohol, smoking, and hard exercise for the first few days.

  • Walk slowly and take breaks often.

  • Tell your guide right away if you feel a headache, nausea, or dizziness.

  • Think about taking Diamox (ask your doctor first).

  • Our guides have oxygen tanks and first-aid stuff. The jeep tour makes it easier than hiking.

Packing List

Pack smart for your 2026 Tibet tour. Keep bags under 15 kg:

  • Clothing: Thermal underwear, warm fleece jacket, down jacket, windproof coat, long pants, hiking pants, warm hat, sun hat, gloves, hiking socks, comfy shoes, and hiking boots.

  • Accessories: Sunglasses (with UV protection), sunscreen (SPF 50+), lip balm, your medicines, camera and batteries, power bank, headlamp, water bottle, day backpack, and trekking poles (if you want).

  • Documents: Passport (good for 6+ months), passport photos, travel insurance, emergency contacts, and copies of important papers.

Respecting Tibetan Culture

Tibet has strong Buddhist traditions. Show respect like this:

  • Always walk clockwise around monasteries, stupas, and holy sites.

  • Ask before taking photos inside monasteries.

  • Dress modestly in religious places.

  • Don't touch religious items or art.

  • Avoid talking about politics in Tibet.

  • Take off your shoes before entering temples.

Road Conditions & Weather

The border at Gyirong/Rasuwagadhi has rough roads, especially in the monsoon. The 10-hour drive to Kathmandu can be bumpy. You can upgrade to a better jeep for comfort. The weather in the Himalayas changes fast. Clouds might hide mountain views sometimes. We can't control that, but our Lhasa to EBC plan includes several Everest spots (like Gawula Pass and Rongbuk) to boost your chances of clear views.
